Lockout Of Tug Crews Will Not Proceed

Svitzer’s lockout of its maritime employees will not go ahead today, the Fair Work Commission advised last night.

The hearing remains underway and the commission is considering whether to terminate Svitzer’s protected industrial action or suspend it.

According to a statement to customers from Svitzer, the FWC made it clear it would issue an order before midday today (18 November). The three maritime unions withdrew notices of protected industrial action that were due to take place today. It included work stoppages of 24 hours, 12 hours and four hours at ports around the country. At the FWC hearing, the unions have argued for a suspension of industrial action, while Svitzer and others have argued for a termination.

On this basis, confirmation has been received that today’s scheduled lockout will not proceed allowing industry to return to planned shipping movements and recommence port operations.

Henning Harders will continue coverage of this story and provide updates as they become available.
